The VA Standardizes on CenTrak
The US Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded a $543 million contract to CenTrak to deploy its Clinical-Grade RTLS infrastructure across all 152 VA medical centers and 1,400 clinics, enabling enterprise-wide real-time location tracking of mobile medical equipment and clinical applications to improve utilization, sterile processing, and patient safety, with future potential uses including patient wander prevention and hand hygiene compliance, leveraging integration with Cisco’s Wi-Fi network and Mobility Services Engine for a high-performance, cost-effective solution.
The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has selected CenTrak’s Clinical-Grade RTLS™ infrastructure in a $543 million federal contract to support multiple equipment and clinical applications across all of its 152 medical centers and 1,400 ancillary clinics.
CenTrak’s active-RTLS infrastructure will be used to location-enable all VA hospitals, clinics, and consolidated mail outpatient pharmacies as a subcontractor to HP. This enterprise-wide RTLS infrastructure will automate the management of hundreds of thousands of mobile medical devices, impacting their availability, utilization, shrinkage, and patient safety. The Clinical-Grade Locating™ technology supports workflow improvements such as:
- Mobile medical equipment utilization
- Sterile processing efficiency
- Monitoring temperature-sensitive consumables
Potential future RTLS applications include:
- Patient wander prevention
- Hand hygiene compliance
- High acuity (OR and ED) workflow
The VA has a history of setting important healthcare IT standards, including the development of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) through the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA). The VA also developed the first automated data processing systems with extensive clinical and administrative capabilities and received the Computerworld Smithsonian Award for best use of Information Technology in Medicine.
